National LGBTQ+ Federation launches new Activist Academy in Ireland

In a time of growing hostility towards LGBTQ+ rights, particularly trans rights and the disturbing rise of far-right ideologies promoting racism, sexism, and anti-immigrant sentiment, the need for skilled, connected, and empowered activists has never been greater. The National LGBTQ+ Federation (NXF) is responding to this urgent need with the launch of the NXF Activist Academy, a groundbreaking training programme for anyone passionate about LGBTQ+ rights and wider social justice.
Taking place in Galway from August 8 to 10, 2025, the Activist Academy is a fully-funded, three-day residential training opportunity. Participation is completely free, with all travel, accommodation, and meals covered for those selected. However, places are limited and demand is expected to be high, so applicants are encouraged to apply early. The deadline for applications is July 21, 2025.
The Academy is open to anyone aged 18 or over who is normally resident in Ireland and wants to take their first steps into activism, or strengthen their existing knowledge and commitment to social justice. Whether you’re deeply involved in your community or just beginning to explore activism, the Academy offers practical tools, inspiration, and connection.
The programme features dynamic workshops and discussions across a wide range of themes, including:
Looking Inward/Intersectionality: Explore how identity, privilege and oppression intersect within our community, fostering deeper understanding and solidarity.
Communications: Learn how to craft powerful messages, use social media effectively, and develop public speaking skills to influence and inspire.
Resilience: Build personal and collective strategies to sustain activism, avoid burnout and prioritise mental health and wellbeing.
Political Understanding: Gain insights into how the political system functions, how laws are made, and how to engage meaningfully with policymakers.
Getting Organised: Acquire hands-on skills in campaign planning, grassroots organising, and community mobilisation for real-world impact.
Building Coalitions: Understand how to forge strong alliances with other movements, including feminism, anti-racism and migrant justice, to build collective power.
Resistance: Develop strategic approaches to counter growing opposition, defend rights under threat, and push forward equality in increasingly hostile environments.
A unique feature of the Activist Academy is its intergenerational approach, bringing together emerging leaders and seasoned campaigners to share knowledge, experience and wisdom. You’ll have the opportunity to learn directly from respected activists, including Ailbhe Smyth, Bulelani Mfaco, Michael Barron, Lynda Sheridan, Pradeep Mahaadeshwar, Ollie Bell, Emily Brennan, Meg Ryan, Brian Sheehan, and many more.
If you’re passionate about equality, ready to take action, and committed to intersectional activism that embraces LGBTQ+ rights alongside anti-racism, feminism and migrant justice, the NXF Activist Academy is for you.
