The Activist Academy

Overview
In August 2025, the NXF hosted its first Activist Academy, funded by the Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission.
This residential course set out to bring together varied ages and experiences to work together in developing the tools and knowledge needed for effective activism. The skills-based and intergenerational training sought to educate and empower a new generation of LGBTI+ activists, particularly in the specific circumstances of a growing backlash against trans and broader LGBTI+ rights. It also endeavoured to empower young activists to fully understand the links between racism, misogyny and class with anti-LGBT+ activism and campaigns on migrants’ rights and women’s rights and to defend and acknowledge the intersectionality of Ireland’s LGBTI+ communities.
The Activist Academy provided a generational bridge between current LGBTI+ activists, including those with decades of experience, and younger people who now live in a climate of backlash and the growth of the far right.

Programme
Content included the history of LGBTI+ and other activism in Ireland; tools for action and strategies for campaigning in the strength of unity. The content and format were developed with the support of an Advisory Working Group, made up of representatives from LGBTI+ organisations and campaign groups.
21st century activism includes elements of grassroots and institutional action and both physical and online activism. The Activist Academy developed the campaigning and leadership skills of a younger generation, learning from the skills and activism of older generations and the history of LGBTI+ rights, to activate for human rights, justice, visibility and equality.
In the current times of toxic trans/homophobia, misogyny and racism, both physical and online, the need for this Academy is vital to create space where resistances can be planned, shared, and acted on. Creating networks for participants and presenters to build on, solidarity and shared energy can lead a new generation of activists forward.
We are continuing our work on the Activist Academy, so stay tuned!
