Gender Minority Students in Institutes of Higher Education

Overview
Stemming from a collaborative project between the NXF, Transgender Equality Network Ireland, and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Unit, the Resource Guide: Safeguarding, Supporting, and Supervising Gender Minority Students in Institutes of Higher Education is intended for readers both new to and well-versed in gender diversity issues. The guide provides information, advice, considerations, and reference materials for the inclusion and protection of the Trans*, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-Conforming community in higher education, as well as for the larger LGBTQIA+ community
The resource guide, authored by Dr. Chris Chevallier and Dr. Conor Buggy, covers topics ranging from student housing and PhD supervision to inclusive language and campus health services while attempting to take an intersectional approach.
Key Findings
Based in part on survey data gathered from gender minority students in Irish third-level education, the guide includes a number of recommendations. These included:
Gender neutral bathrooms.
Voluntary listing of personal pronouns as part of email signatures, social media profiles, and webpage bios serves as a sign of respect to the gender minority community and invitation for others to share their pronouns.
Providing opportunities to list preferred pronouns on forms and registration materials.
The preparation of guidelines and protocols for gender inclusive housing that are publicly available.
Establishing a database of queer-friendly student accommodations.
Training for residence wardens and security staff.
"I never bought up my gender as I felt I'd be judged for being autistic and having health issues. So I brought the "most important" ones first. Which would have been my physical health."
